Topdeck: Budapest

Our two-night stay in Budapest was fuelled by two things: a huge schnitzel and some questionable plum liquor in an unmarked bottle that our Hungarian coach driver bought from a Bosnian man behind a petrol station.

This is the schnitzel in question. I realise the picture’s a bit blurry, but I blame it on the physical excitement I was experiencing when I took it. The restaurant was in a basement and is apparently famous for its portion sizes. I managed about two-thirds before giving up.

Apparently “eating is cheating”, but we went out anyway. Akos, the coach driver, took us (the boys) to some of Budapest’s best dive-bars. The plum liquor would be hidden in a dark doorway while we were inside, and then recovered to drink on the walk to the next place. I’ll be honest, it didn’t taste a bit like plum – it was more akin to petrol or possibly paint thinner – the only positive was that it made the beer in the bars taste brilliant because it was washing away the taste of the bootleg Bosnian petrol station hooch.

The next day we had a full day to see the sights in Budapest, so that’s exactly what we did…

Heroes’ Square

The Budapest Parliament building – originally designed to be built in Vienna during Austro-Hungarian times, it was built here instead because there was no room in Vienna. Apparently the inspiration came from the Houses of Parliament.

St Stephen’s Basilica.

The evolution of man (sort of) in Budapest’s Labyrinth.

Next Stop: Bratislava, Slovakia
