By the time we arrived in Krakow it was dark – our detour to
Auschwitz on the way up from Vienna had taken it out of us all. The rain had been coming down for a while and
we didn’t really fancy putting up our tents in the puddles that had formed on
the campsite. Luckily we had the option to upgrade to a cabin, so we did. By
this point I was convinced I was coming down with bubonic plague, so I went
straight to bed.
I still felt a bit ropey the morning after, as this picture
shows, but by lunch time I’d miraculously recovered.
It was a sunny day to start with so we were all pretty
happy.
We saw a few sights. This is the St Peter and Paul church.
Then it started to rain, so we decided we’d go down the
nearby salt mine to escape it. To be clear this was a tourist attraction, we
didn’t just decide to break into a mine. We waited two hours to get in and it
really wasn’t worth it. As a rule I’ll be avoiding places where you’re
encouraged to lick the walls in the future.
The sun didn’t come back out in central Krakow after that so
we had pizza and retreated to our cabins. The rain stopped for long enough to
do some stargazing that night, but it started again once we’d gone to bed. We
woke up to a partly flooded field and the news that our coach was stuck in the
mud. Two hours of digging and pushing followed, but we got out eventually.
